Internship: Museum Education Intern, National Farm Toy Museum



The National Farm Toy Museum is seeking a qualified university or college students seeking to gain hands-on experience in a museum education setting. This paid internship is available during May – August 2012 and made possible with the assistance of an internship grant from the Silos and Smokestacks National Heritage Area.


Job Description:

This internship will focus on conceptualizing an education program for the museum.  The intern will be working primarily with the National Farm Toy Museum Manager on a variety of projects related to establishing the Museum’s education programs. The intern will experience all aspects of working in a museum. Specific duties include research and preparing materials for tours; interacting with visitors and groups through educational and instructional activities and tours; and developing curriculum and educational programs for various exhibitions.


  • Perform background research

  • Implement new group educational programs

  • Develop promotional materials

  • Perform online marketing and promotion

  • Assist with documentation and analysis of program/exhibit/shows

  • Field customer phone calls, take admissions, etc


Excellent computer skills are necessary, with experience working on the internet and in social media. Excellent research, written and oral communication skills, excellent organizational skills, and attention to detail are important. Intern needs to be able to work independently with minimal supervision.


Experience in the following areas is preferred: museum education experience; experience supervising children; teaching experience; good written communication skills; public speaking skills; background in educational theory and practice; computer skills, word-processing; and basic office skills.

The National Farm Toy Museum is a small organization and all staff members, as well as interns, are often called on to do any number of things such as assisting with public programs, basic office work, mailings, etc.
